That's no moon... it's a new S Filter!

You know how proud parents announce the birth of their treasured little one on Facebook and more or less spam their friends with baby pictures for months afterwards? Well, the new S Filter is kind of our baby but we promise not to do that.

Ok, here are the new specs: (along with a handy Star Wars meme, because who doesn't need a Star Wars meme?)

Hey, it's round. It's steel gray. And it's openings are way smaller than womp rats. It doesn't come with a planet destroying laser yet but give us a break... :)

New S Filter Spec #1: The new S Filter has really tiny holes (just 43.2 microns across). That is REALLY tiny. Like so tiny we're having trouble communicating how small those holes are.

Here's a picture:

Those tiny little holes are 43.2 microns across. That's so small you can't see the mesh openings unaided.

Those tiny little holes are 43.2 microns across. That's so small you can't see the mesh openings unaided.

43.2 microns means the new S Filter is 29% finer than the old S Filter (which was already pretty darn fine). Why does this matter? Because smaller holes mean the S Filter can catch even more coffee fines than it did before, thus making your coffee taste even cleaner than it did before.

By the way, this new finer mesh doesn't mean that the new S Filter has removed that rich "French press flavor" that our customers have raved about. That rich flavor comes from tiny coffee oil droplets, and those droplets are so small that they still pass through the openings in the new S Filter just fine. So don't worry, coffee brewed with the new S Filter should still knock your socks off, especially if you're used to paper filtered brews! :)

New S Filter Spec #2: It has 12 welds instead of 8 (and it's 10% thinner too).

12 welds, maybe because we're from Seattle and the number 12 is a big deal around here.

12 welds, maybe because we're from Seattle and the number 12 is a big deal around here.

Why 12? Because the new S Filter is a tiny bit thinner than the old one (.018" compared to .02") and we wanted to make sure that slimming it down didn't compromise the S Filter's strength in any way.

Shaving 2 thousands of an inch (or 5 hundredths of a millimeter) off the thickness of the S Filter may not seem like much, but we noticed it made a significant difference in how easily the S Filter fit (especially with brand new AeroPresses). A smoother fit may seem like a small change, but it's one of those little things that can make a morning go just that little bit better. And we all need our mornings to be as happy and calm as possible (especially when it comes to coffee).

New S Filter Spec #3: The emperor has new clothes (or new packaging, and we promise it's not invisible).

6 - S-Filter-Package-Front.jpg

The front of the new package includes a handy S Filter graphic and a more prominent product name so you know what it is as soon as you open the mailing envelope.

Customer service is a really big deal to us, so we decided to feature our help@ email address more prominently on the package. If you have a question about the S Filter we want you to know who to talk to to get answers!

Design nerds may notice that we added a bit of color to the packaging this time. We think it spices things up a bit, just like the flavors in a good cup of coffee. :)

7 - S-Filter-Package-Open-Recipe-View.jpg

The back of the package has an easy rip seal that makes it simple to open. Because we're betting that when the mailman shows up you're waiting on the steps with baited breath and then headed straight for your AeroPress to make that all important first cup of S Filtered coffee!

We know everyone has their own way of making AeroPress coffee, but just in case you want some help there's a new package insert that has handy tips and a complete recipe for making an AeroPress Americano (basically, über concentrated coffee + hot water).

So that's the new S Filter! It's finer, thinner and with new packaging to boot. If you live in the US you can pick up a new S Filter right now on our website or on Amazon (EU folks will need to wait until our next shipment of EU inventory to get their hands on one).
